Keeping Food Safe to Eat While Traveling

Food-borne illnesses cause a lot of problems for people every year, sometimes with serious consequences. Among the most common causes of food poisoning is food that has moved to an unsafe temperature. When packing up your dishes to pass, it’s critical to remember these three items:

  • Don’t travel with hot and cold foods together.
  • Keep hot foods hot by packing them in insulated bags or containers. Supplemental heat packs (kind of like big hand warmers) are available for a relatively low cost.
  • Keep cold foods cold by packing them in coolers with ice, frozen water bottles or ice packs to maintain safe temperatures for as long as possible.

How to Keep Food Secure In the Trunk

You have worked very hard making dishes to share for your holiday parties. It would be nothing short of heartbreaking if the containers tipped over and ruin all of that effort. Here are a few tips our team shared for moving various containers:

  • Make sure all lids are as tightly secured as possible. Many slow cookers have clamps to keep the lids on, but smartly placed bungee cords will also work. Avoid using saran wrap or aluminum foil as lids – the risk of rips is too great.
  • Use collapsable tote bags to consolidate containers to prevent them from sliding around your trunk. Non-slip rubber pads are a great solution to prevent dishes from slipping around.
  • Place a tarp or other protective covering on the floor of the trunk to make clean-up easier if an accident does occur.
