Tire Pressure Changes in the Cold
If we remember back to elementary school science class, we learned that heat causes things to expand and cold causes things to contract. This is why we need to pay attention to the tire pressure on our vehicles. For every 12° C drop below freezing, tires can use up to two PSI. Underinflated tires can lead to a loss of both traction on the road and a decrease in fuel economy.
Increased Engine Stress
In the same vein as temperature affecting tire pressure, cold temperatures can cause motor oil to thicken. Synthetic motor oils are better at resisting this phenomenon, but its still something to be aware of. It can take several minutes of driving for the motor oil to properly lubricate the various parts of the system. Avoid short trips, under 30 minutes, as much as possible during the winter months.
Cracked Windshield Wiper Blades
It’s a good rule of thumb to replace your vehicle’s windshield wiper blades very six months. However, it’s especially important when it gets cold. Winter-rated wiper blades us a more robust rubber formulation that will remain effective at low temperatures, making breaking through snow and ice easier. Additionally, it’s critical to ensure than the windshield wiper fluid is rated to avoid freezing in the coldest conditions.
